Health information may include records, test results, treatment details, and billing information linked to a person. It is sensitive, but its legal treatment depends on the jurisdiction and the parties handling it.

What does PHI mean?

Protected health information, or PHI, is a defined concept under US HIPAA. HIPAA applies to covered entities and business associates in the relevant circumstances. A health related file does not automatically make every organization worldwide subject to HIPAA.

Why smaller suppliers should pay attention

A supplier serving a US healthcare organization may handle PHI on its behalf and need a business associate agreement and appropriate controls. Israeli and other privacy obligations may also apply. Establish the role and the data flow before promising compliance.

Review ordinary ways information leaves the system

Check transfers to personal email, public AI tools, shared folders, and backups. Restrict access to what people need, use approved transfer methods, and confirm the relevant contracts and permissions before a new service receives sensitive information.
